KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — Former national athletics star Datuk Marina Chin will chair a newly established performance evaluation and audit committee set up by the National Sports Council (NSC) to strengthen preparations for the national contingent at the 2027 SEA Games and Asean Para Games.
NSC director-general Jefri Ngadirin said the committee would assess the effectiveness of training programmes implemented by the NSC and the National Sports Institute (NSI) across the three preparation phases and recommend improvements to existing programmes.
“The committee will evaluate the effectiveness of the training programmes implemented by the NSC and NSI across the three phases.
“It will also recommend improvements to management so that we can enhance our programmes and achieve our target of becoming overall champions at the 2027 SEA Games and runners-up at the 2027 Asean Para Games,” he said after the committee’s meeting at the NSC here today.
The committee comprises local experts from various sports-related fields, including Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Faculty of Sports Science and Recreation dean Prof Dr Raja Mohammed Firhad Raja Azidin, and Universiti Malaya (UM) Faculty of Sports and Exercise Sciences deputy dean Dr Eliza Hafiz.
Also on the committee are sports medicine specialist Dr Arshad Puji, sports psychologist Prof Dr Garry Kuan Pei Ern and former national squash player Sharon Wee.
Jefri said the establishment of the committee marked a new approach by the NSC, with external expertise brought in to provide independent views on the preparation and performance of national athletes.
He said the approach differed from the 2017 SEA Games, when performance evaluation was conducted internally by the NSC and NSI without a dedicated audit committee.
“We feel that as the parties implementing the training programmes, we need external input to provide recommendations beyond what we have thought of or implemented all this while,” he said.
The committee will also be given access to training centres and conduct engagement sessions directly with sports associations, coaches and athletes throughout the three preparation phases. — Bernama
