BANGKOK, Jan 31 — The country’s former top men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah were knocked out in the first round of the 2023 Thailand Masters held at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok today.
V Shem-Khim Wah, ranked world number 41 lost to Indonesia pair Pramudya Kusumawardana-Yeremia Rambitan 19-21, 21-19, 14-21 after three sets.
Besides that, independent pair Boon Xin Yuan-Wong Tien Ci also failed to clear the first round, losing 21-23, 21-19, 15-21 to Taiwan’s Su Ching Heng-Ye Hong Wei.
However, two other men’s doubles pairs, Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong and Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Low Juan Shen moved into the second round.
The pairs survived an opening-round scare before winning 22-20, 21-13 against Indian pair Hariharan Amsakarunan-Ruban Rethinasabapathi Kumar. They will now face Indonesian pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani on Wednesday.
Nur Mohd Azriyn-Juan Shen defeated Korean pair Jin Yong — Na Sung Seung 21-18, 21-14 and will be up against Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Yang Ming Tse of Taiwan.
Meanwhile, national men’s singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao failed to clear the qualifying round of Thailand Masters today, losing 22-24, 19-21 to independent player Yeoh Seng Zoe in an all Malaysian affair.
However, Seng Zoe lost 15-21, 21-18, 9-21 to Hong Kong’s Chan Yin Chak in the second qualifying round match today.
Tomorrow, national men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong, independent shuttlers Cheam June Wei and Soong Joo Ven will enter the courts in their first round matches.
Tze Yong will face Brazil’s Ygor Coelho while June Wei is up against Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen and Joo Ven will play Yin Chak.
In the women’s singles, S. Kisona who left the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) last month faces Thailand’s Pornpicha Choeikeewong in the first round tomorrow. — Bernama
