YANGON, Nov 22 — Malaysia must put up a strong display to beat Vietnam in a Group B match of the AFF Suzuki Cup Football Championship at Thuwunna Stadium, here tomorrow.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference today, Malaysia Tigers head coach, Datuk Ong Kim Swee said playing against the Golden Stars (Vietnam) would not be easy considering they are well organised in every department.
He reminded the players to avoid making silly mistakes such as the two simple goals given away before bouncing back to beat Cambodia 3-2 in a Group B opener on Sunday.
“The Vietnam game will be tough. I have an injury free squad which is good. Hopefully, we will have a good game,” said the Melaka-born coach.
Malaysian Tigers skipper, Mohd Amri Yahyah urged his teammates especially the defenders, to focus against Vietnam who has a ferocious strike force lead by veteran Le Cong Vinh.
“Tomorrow’s match will be interesting since both sides have collected three points which will certainly attract a large turnout,” said the veteran player.
Meanwhile, Vietnam head coach Nguyen Huu Thang said the retirement of four key Malaysian players did not affect the team who showed a high team spirit.
Huu Thang said playing in hot weather of up to 33°C would be the main challenge for his charges but confident they would adapt quickly.
Meanwhile, Cong Vinh reminded his teammates not to undermine the strength of the Malaysian Tigers as he had played against them many times.
“Playing against Malaysia will be tough. I hope that we can do well in the game and collect full points,” said the skipper who netted the winning goal in Vietnam’s 2-1 win over joint host Myanmar in a Group B match on Saturday.
Based on the last 16 meetings since 1991, Vietnam has a better record over Malaysia, having won eight, lost six and drew two matches.
Myanmar will take on Cambodia in another Group B match at the same venue, later tomorrow. — Bernama
