SINGAPORE, June 13 — Malaysia’s national women discus thrower Yap Jeng Tzan did not disappoint the Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) when she clinched the silver medal at the SEA Games held at the National Stadium here yesterday.
She was not listed in the 2013 Myanmar SEA Games as the national athletics body was not confident with her capability to contribute a medal for the national contingent then.
Her throw of 46.95 metres was good enough for a silver medal even though it was 12.61 metres behind the event winner, Insaeng Subenrat of Thailand, who heaved a new games record at 59.56 metres.
The bronze medal went to Hannah Lee with 45.72m.
Yap, 28, said she was happy with her outing today as she able to repay the confidence MAF had in her.
“I was however, disappointed with the distance as I failed to meet the 50-metre target set by coach Frank Petrovic.
“The medal is a gift for him as it is his birthday today,” she told reporters after the event.
Yap said she was still nursing an old injury which had not completely healed in the last three years.
“I could still feel the pain on my left knee but my desire to win kept me going to the sixth throw,” she added. — Bernama
