SINGAPORE, Oct 4 — Four master tenants at Punggol East Container Park and the nearby Tebing Lane will be offered a lease extension of up to one year, until the end of 2027.
This follows reports of Punggol East Container Park’s closure on November 1 for future residential redevelopment.
Punggol MP Yeo Wan Ling said yesterday that she recently met the relevant agencies to discuss concerns raised by the businesses there regarding the upcoming expiry of their tenancies.
“Following a review and adjustments to the development timelines, the agencies will be able to offer the four master tenants an extension of up to one year, until end-2027,” she wrote in a Facebook post.
“This will provide more time for them to work through their transition and business continuity plans, including engagements with their sub-tenants, subject to the relevant tenancy and regulatory requirements.
Yeo did not name the leaseholders.
Agencies including the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), JTC Corporation, National Parks Board and Housing Development Board will continue to assist affected businesses in exploring alternative premises — suitable options in the Punggol area, where available — by connecting them with the relevant government landlords and agencies, she added.
The site’s tenancy runs until December 31. After this date, the area will undergo residential development, according to SLA.
Punggol East Container Park’s master tenant City Sprouts said it received an official notice in May to vacate the site and carry out necessary reinstatement works within the stipulated timeline, The Straits Times reported.
City Sprouts added that it will offer its Punggol community farmers the opportunity to relocate to its new space at Pasir Ris Park, or other community greenhouses in the nation.
“I am glad that the agencies have been able to provide this additional flexibility. I hope the extension will give businesses more time to prepare for the transition, while allowing the community to continue enjoying these spaces as the area prepares for its next chapter,” Yeo wrote.
She also told Lianhe Zaobao that the lease extension is solely intended for affected businesses to have more time to make alternative arrangements.
The tenants must decide whether to accept the extension, comply with regulations and coordinate with subtenants and the relevant authorities, she added.
The Punggol East Container Park has been operating for around 10 years.
Isrudy Shaik, owner of halal barbecue eatery Smok Hous at the container park, posted a video on August 29 sharing news its upcoming closure.
At the time, The Smok Hous told AsiaOne that it had been informed in July of the upcoming closure by its landlord, stating that the land the container park was on will be taken back by the government. — AsiaOne
