KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — Prime Video has cast English actor Dan Stevens as the new RoboCop in its upcoming eight‑episode series.
According to reports, the series, which Prime Video originally announced in July, has now received an eight-episode order.
Stevens will play the fallen officer whose consciousness is transferred into the powerful robotic law-enforcement machine, putting a new spin on the central concept of the original franchise.
The project has been in development since Amazon’s 2022 acquisition of MGM, bringing the classic science-fiction franchise back to the screen in a new television format.
The series comes from writer, executive producer and showrunner Peter Ocko.
James Wan, Michael Clear and Rob Hackett will executive produce through Blumhouse Atomic Monster, while Michael Miner and Ed Neumeier, the co-creators and co-writers of the original RoboCop film, will also serve as executive producers.
Danielle Bozzone of Blumhouse Atomic Monster will serve as co-executive producer and oversee the project for the company.
Amazon MGM Studios will produce the series.
RoboCop became a landmark of science-fiction cinema when it was first released in 1987.
The film follows police officer Alex Murphy after he is brutally killed and transformed into a heavily armed cyborg law-enforcement officer.
The original film grossed approximately US$53.4 million (RM215.9 million) at the box office and earned an Academy Award for Special Achievement in Sound Editing in 1988.
The franchise went on to produce two sequels, RoboCop 2 (1990) and RoboCop 3 (1993), as well as an animated series, a live-action television series, and a 2014 reboot starring Joel Kinnaman.
The impact of RoboCop continues to this day.
Last year, a bronze statue of the character was created and installed in Detroit, honouring the city where the franchise is set in a dystopian, crime-ridden future.
The statue further cemented RoboCop’s place in the city’s popular culture.
