KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — As the much-anticipated sequel to the 2001 blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Gadar 2 was expected to be a hit but even fans didn’t expect it to be this big of a hit.
The period action drama, which sees Bollywood actor Sunny Deol reprising his iconic role as truck driver Tara Singh, is now the undisputed box office king, reported BollywoodLife.
On its opening day last Friday, Gadar 2 grossed a total of RM22.2 million which failed to defeat the RM31.7 million collection of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan.
But on Sunday, Gadar 2 made bank with a whopping RM28.9 million, defeating Pathaan’s first Sunday earnings of RM21.8 million.
The trend continued on Monday, with Gadar 2 recording RM21.7 million, the biggest Monday collection for a Bollywood film this year, in contrast to Pathaan’s RM14.7 million.
With the critics hailing Bollywood actor Sunny Deol as the OG superstar of the Indian film industry, it’s safe to say that Gadar 2 will be remembered as one of the most successful and popular movies of 2023.
Set 17 years after the first film which takes place during the Partition of India in 1947, Gadar 2 follows Tara Singh as he searches for his imprisoned son during the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971.
Directed by Anil Sharma, the movie also stars 29-year-old actor Utkarsh Sharma, who was seven when he first played Tara Singh’s son Charanjeet in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
Great things are expected in the coming weeks as it has already grossed RM111 million worldwide in just four days, becoming the fifth movie in 2023 to achieve this.
