KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — Malaysian film Rahsia which won the Best Film award at the 7th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM7) in 1987 is getting a reboot.

The reboot for the horror classic directed by Othman Hafsham which bagged seven awards at FFM7 including for Best Director, will hit cinemas on August 10.

The new Rahsia film is directed by Othman’s son, Shamyl Othman with the script by Alfie Palermo, who also worked on the highly acclaimed local series One Cent Thief.

The film’s executive producer and Astro Shaw head, Raja Jastina Raja Arshad said that among the reasons they chose to reboot Rahsia was due to it's cult classic status.

According to Gempak, she said that the film was a phenomenon when it first came out in 1987 which impacted the local film industry.

“We believe that the storyline is still relevant today and the new generation might not know about the 1987’s film.

“We hope that this rebooted version can create new history as it’s not common for local films to get rebooted compared to foreign movies.

“We are not trying to compete with the original film but instead it's an appreciation towards one of the best local films in Malaysia and we’ll do our best not to disappoint its fans,” she said.

The 2023 Rahsia boast a lineup of local stars including Nabila Huda, Fikry Ibrahim, Eman Manan, Rashidi Ishak, Qistina Raisah, Aloy Paradoks as well as special appearances by Othman Hafsham himself and Susan Lankester.

Rahsia tells the story of Ramlah (Nabila Huda) on vacation with husband, Hamdan (Fikry Ibrahim) and children, Marina and Saiful at her father’s house.

Things take a turn when one of her children, Saiful, goes missing while they picnic by the beach.

Although the police suspects Saiful disappeared while at the beach, Ramlah is convinced that her son was taken by a darker force especially after she was is frequently disturbed by an unknown entity.
