KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 —Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh has kept her 2023 Oscar speech promise by bringing the trophy back to her mother in Malaysia.
In an Instagram post, the Ipoh-born shared a picture of her mother Datin Janet Yeoh holding the coveted golden statuette.
The Academy Award-winning actress came back home to Malaysia for Qing Ming.
“Brought Mr. O home...Without my parent’s love and trust and support...I wouldn’t be here today...love so much,” Yeoh wrote on Instagram.
The second picture featured Yeoh visiting her late father Datuk Yeoh Kian Tiek’s grave with the award.
A family friend said she had returned to Malaysia on Saturday to pay her respects.
“She was only here for a few hours and went to Hong Kong after that,” the friend said.
During her Oscar acceptance speech on March 13, the actress thanked her mother and promised to take home the award to her.
“She’s watching right now in Malaysia, KL with my family and friends - I love you guys,” Yeoh said.
“I have to dedicate this to my mum, all the mums in the world, because they are really the superheroes and without them, none of us would be here tonight.”
Yeoh made history by being the first Malaysian and Asian to win an Academy Award for Best Actress for her lead role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
The beloved actress is expected to meet her fans at a red-carpet event at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur’s centre court on April 18 at 5.30pm.
