KUALA LUMPUR, April 10 — Film director Syamsul Yusof has finally agreed to divorce his first wife, actress Puteri Sarah Liyana Megat Kamaruddin.
As determined by the Syariah Lower Court, the couple are expected to divorce on April 18.
Puteri Sarah said that she was thankful with the results of discussions conducted by the representatives of both parties over the last few days.
"Thank God for the decision. We have been having meetings over the last few days on the terms and conditions and everything has been resolved,” Puteri Sarah said in an interview with Harian Metro today.
"This will enable us to move on with our lives.”
Syamsul, 39 and Puteri Sarah, 38 married on March 8, 2014 and have two children — Syaikhul Islam and Summayyah
In early January, Syamsul made a bombshell announcement that he had taken 27-year-old actress Ira Kazar as a second wife in Thailand after months of speculation.
The media frenzy continued with Puteri Liyana almost immediately asking for a divorce while Syamsul asked for her to come back to their matrimonial home to discuss matters.
Unwilling to be in a polygamous marriage, Puteri Liyana filed for divorce from husband Syamsul Yusof in mid-March.
Syamsul then accused Puteri Sarah of having an affair with an ex-boyfriend, a married man in late March.
Denying it, she responded by asking him to provide proof of the alleged affair.
Even as they continued divorce proceedings, Syamsul and Puteri Sarah were scheduled to be briefed by the reconciliation committee earlier by order of the court.
The committee decided to endorse their decision to divorce.
This morning, Puteri Sarah’s lawyer Akberdin Abdul Kader said that Syamsul and Puteri Sarah have agreed to an amicable split during court proceedings with Syarie judge Akmalludin Ilyas.
However, the terms of the divorce, with regards to child custody, consolatory gift, financial support and matrimonial property, have yet to be finalised.
It is learnt that Puteri Sarah has already filed an application for permanent full custody for her two children at Syariah High Court this morning.
