JAKARTA, Feb 23 — Veteran rock band Slank have called on the Indonesian government to implement a law that imposes the death penalty on corrupt officials.

Lead vocalist Akhadi Wira Satriaji, who is popularly known as Kaka, and drummer Bimbim made their sentiments known during a mini concert in the lobby of the Corruption Eradication Commission yesterday.

The band wanted to show their support for the anti-graft body and protest the controversial revision of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Law.

According to The Jakarta Post, Kaka said, “We are performing today to assert that Slank is anti-corruption and supports the KPK,” before launching into a song entitled Seperti Para Koruptor (As the Corrupters).

The song criticises the hypocrisy of public officials who advise the public to live modestly yet are themselves corrupt and live lavishly.

Bimbim, meanwhile, echoed his bandmate, by adding: “Instead of proposing amendments to the 2002 KPK Law, it’s better for [House of Representatives] members to produce a law that stipulates a death penalty for corrupt officials.”

Slank, which was formed in December 1983 and has released more than 30 albums to date, have often been critical of government policies and social conditions.
