LONDON, Oct 27 — Twenty-one-year-old singer-songwriter Marika Hackman has been earning praise since the release of her mini-album, “That Iron Taste,” in February of this year. With an EP coming in December and a debut LP in the works, she’s got the music world waiting for what comes next.
Who?
Marika Hackman grew up in Hampshire and Devon, England. While tagged in the folk genre, Hackman often experiments with different sounds. As she told The Telegraph back in August, “I was a fan of the nu-folk scene when I was younger. But I’m trying to take it somewhere different -- I’m drawn to the darker, melancholic side of things.”
Her mini-album “That Iron Taste” was called “one of the most enchanting listening experiences I’ve ever had” by The Wild Honey Pie and garnered buzz with lead single “Cannibal” as well as “Bath Is Black,” which When the Gramophone Rings this week called “one of the most brilliantly addictive singles of 2013 to date.”
Why the buzz?
Hackman’s ever-experimental, ever-evolving sound, always held steady by her clear vocals, has fans and media taking note. “Constantly progressing looking to redefine Indie-Folk music,” praised Scientists of Sound, while The Line of Best Fit called her “the leading light of nu-folk.”
Newest track “Cinnamon” sees Hackman experimenting once again, this time using more instrumental back-up and inspiring The Music Ninja to write, “To say that we’re anxiously awaiting hearing the rest of ‘Sugar Blind’ would be a ridiculous understatement.”
