Sabah police advise against gospel band Israel & New Breed concert over public sensitivities, two reports lodged

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 28 — Sabah police have advised that a band named Israel & New Breed’s planned concert here in October not be held for now, citing public sensitivities and concerns over public order.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said police had received two reports concerning the concert, which has been widely publicised on social media.

“Given the current sensitivities, we will advise that this concert not be held for the time being,” he said, adding that no official application has been made by the concert organisers despite online circulars being publicised including date, venue and ticket prices.

“We advise the state government, which will receive the application, to make a decision and notify the applicant,” he said at a special press conference at the Sabah Police Contingent headquarters here today.

Jauteh also said police had yet to receive any request from the state government for their views on the concert.

He said should a formal application be received, the state government could seek police views before deciding on the matter.

“So far, we have received two police reports. We will continue monitoring the situation and recording statements from certain parties in relation to the concert. We also advise them to take seriously the sensitivities among members of the public at this time,” he said.

He said no investigation paper had been opened over the issue so far, with police currently providing advice based on public reactions and the prevailing situation.

Jauteh said police had also taken note of public reactions concerning confusion over the artiste’s name and allegations about the artiste’s position on Israel.

However, he said the main consideration for police was public sensitivity and maintaining public order.

“What is important here is that we look at public sensitivities and public order.

“We will strive to ensure that any sensitivities that could lead to a situation in which public order is disrupted are addressed, and we will take appropriate action,” he said.

According to the flyers, the concern is scheduled for next month although dates and venue vary slightly on different platforms.

The American praise and worship band, led by a Grammy Award-winning artist named Israel Houghton is on its “Til The Whole World Knows” tour.
