KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Malaysia Airlines has confirmed that flight MH89 from Tokyo Narita International Airport to Kuala Lumpur was cancelled today after the aircraft aborted its take-off due to a technical issue involving one of its engines.

The national carrier said that all 160 passengers and crew on board the Airbus A330-300 are safe.

In a statement issued here, Malaysia Airlines apologised for the disruption and confirmed that all affected passengers are being assisted with alternative travel arrangements.

“Meals, lounge access and hotel accommodation are being provided where applicable, while alternative travel arrangements are being made for affected passengers,” the airline said, adding that the safety and well-being of its passengers and crew remains its highest priority.

Affected travellers will be accommodated on the next available flights to Kuala Lumpur. There have been no reports of injuries following the incident.

The aircraft, which was scheduled to depart for Kuala Lumpur this morning, was forced to halt its departure and is now undergoing a comprehensive technical inspection.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 10.40am local time, reportedly involved black smoke emanating from the aircraft as it taxied onto the runway.

Public broadcaster NHK reported that the emergency prompted the temporary closure of Narita Airport’s Runway A for safety inspections.
