KUCHING, Oct 31 — Firefighters took some six hours to control a blaze that began late Wednesday involving piles of used tyres at a factory along Mile 9 Jalan Indah Ria here.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the fire, which was reported at 11.10pm, destroyed the factory and damaged a nearby plastics recycling plant.
“Teams from the Kota Samarahan, Kota Sentosa, Siburan and Tabuan Jaya fire stations arrived at the location to discover piles of tyres outside the factory engulfed in flames.
“The flames later spread to and destroyed the factory, and damaged an adjacent recycling plant,” said Bomba in a statement, adding no reports of injuries or casualties were received.
Damage to the recycling plant was estimated at 60 per cent.
Bomba said the blaze was brought under control by 5.15am early today, with overhaul and excavation works carried out to fully extinguish remaining hotspots.
It added that cooling operations were still being conducted as of 10.50am, with about 40 per cent of the fire successfully put out.
Efforts were also underway to obtain assistance from the Padawan Municipal Council for an excavator to facilitate extinguishing efforts.
