KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 — In his Hari Raya Aidilfitri address tonight, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for Malaysians to be united and forgiving, for the greater good of the country.

The call comes amidst heightened tensions over the “Allah” socks issue and related controversies.

Anwar emphasised the importance on drawing upon previous experience to avoid pitfalls, and to build opportunities for common progress and prosperity.

“In the same context, I would like to stress that this country requires the strength of all parties. Of all regions, of all races, to elevate it to the best and dignified level. We can’t sideline or even antagonise any majority or minority groups of any race or religion nor beliefs, for any reason.

“This nation building framework is not a reason to underestimate the importance of Islam as a federal religion and to improve implementation of shariah elements in our country. In fact, we should be firm, sure and uncompromising in our seriousness to cultivate values and build a dignified nation.

“However, let’s not consider this as a certificate, an opportunity to belittle, insult or damage the cultural methods and other people’s way of life. This is the balance. The balance that needs to be maintained in our spirit in Malaysia, in celebrating this Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” Anwar said.

He also advised Malaysians to be on guard against pride and hubris.

“There are excesses, harsh words and anger. So, take this opportunity to seek forgiveness sincerely and deeply from the bottom of your heart and conscience.

“This is also what I would like to convey to all Muslims and our friends, Malaysians as a whole, which is to apologise if there have been excessiveness in words, language mistakes, or if we have hurt the feelings of our friends and relatives,” he added.

Muslims in Malaysia will welcome their holy month of Syawal tomorrow.
