CYBERJAYA, Oct 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said he had been threatened by certain European parliamentarians after speaking up for Palestinian rights in the Middle East.
He did not disclose their identities or which member states of the European Union had issued threatening remarks against him, but said he will not be cowed.
“There were European MPs who gave,” he said, trailing off before adding that he will give a clear statement later.
He indicated that the threats came in the form of statements, with one made directly from an unnamed European MPs.
To Anwar it was “not a problem”.
“We have work to do and we will continue to do it,” he told reporters after attending a carnival to promote the national language at the Multimedia University here.
Anwar was asked to elaborate about what threats he had received following his public disclosure during the mass solidarity rally with Palestine at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil here last night.
The PM replied that he is not worried for his own safety, and expressed confidence in the local police force to handle domestic security threats.
“The inspector-general of police is here. He will take care of it, so I am not worried.
“Insya Allah, we will continue to work. We have to voice the views from Malaysia,” he replied.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain had told national news agency Bernama separately today that Anwar’s security detail has been increased following the prime minister’s disclosure.
Razarudin was reported saying that the threats could also be linked to economic and trade matters.
Anwar is also finance minister and has been courting investors abroad to boost Malaysia’s post-Covid economic recovery.
