PUTRAJAYA, Sept 21 — The director-general of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) Datuk Hakimah Mohd Yusoff said the worrying number of divorces in the country does not call for a revision of pre-marriage courses.
She said instead Jakim is focusing on marriage divorce prevention instead.
“The courses were recently revised in 2018. The courses are intended to educate couples on marriage.
“We are focusing on prevention. We now have the post-marriage module. It is not mandatory. We hope it will be some sort of wall to the married couples,” she said during a press conference at the Islamic Family Regional Conference 2023, at the Putra Mosque here.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar added that the module is a way for married couples to rediscover their spark.
“Maybe after a long time, they have forgotten about their responsibilities for example, so this can freshen up their knowledge on marriage,” he said.
Earlier this month, Jakim said the proposed 10-year validity period for the Islamic Pre-Marriage Course certificate beginning October 1 as reported, is still at the consideration stage.
According to Jakim, the proposal was raised to ensure that the content of the course module is more relevant and effective for married couples.
