KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim today asked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to address the recent discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) controversy in the Dewan Rakyat.
Without explicitly mentioning the case in question, Hassan went on to say that Anwar did not interfere with the attorney general’s (AG) decision-making process, but added that the prime minister should explain the situation to members of Parliament nonetheless.
“Regarding the DNAA case, the AG is responsible for it. And it is ideal that the select committee summon the past and present AGs for an explanation.
“The best time to get an explanation from the prime minister is during Prime Minister’s Question Time, and to be fair to the Opposition and backbenchers alike, I ask him to put an end to the issue in this House once and for all,” the Pakatan Harapan lawmaker said when debating the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12 MP) in the Dewan Rakyat.
Hassan then responded that he was not “throwing Anwar under the bus” after an unseen member of the Opposition bloc asked whether Anwar's explanation on the issue could be trusted.
“I believe what he said to me, from a leader to a party member. I have the right to believe whatever my leader says. I will not throw my leader under the bus!” he said.
On September 4, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was granted a DNAA on all 47 of his corruption, criminal breach of trust (CBT), and money laundering charges involving his foundation, Yayasan Akalbudi. A DNAA means that an accused person can be charged again on the same charges.
Several parties including the Malaysian Bar Council had previously called out the AG to explain the prosecution’s application for the DNAA of Ahmad Zahid at a late stage in his trial.
