KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 — The National Registration Department (NRD) today denied the veracity of a video claiming that throngs of Chinese immigrants were seeking MyKads and Malaysian citizenship with the help of DAP.
NRD urged the public to scrutinise every piece of news that they read and received and to refrain from spreading false information as this could jeopardise public order.
“NRD would like to highlight a viral video alleging that ‘throngs of Chinese immigrants are seeking citizenship from DAP’.
“The video, which is being circulated now, was from 2018. At the time, JPN issued an official statement refuting the allegation,” the government department said in a statement.
NRD stressed that the allocation of Malaysian citizenship is done in accordance with the Federal Constitution and other existing laws to safeguard the sovereignty and security of the country.
According to various reports, the video in question was recorded in 2018 during an event organised by Kepong DAP to brief Chinese nationals on Malaysia’s citizenship and MyKad application procedures.
Last month, NRD denied a similar allegation after another viral video claimed that 54,000 Chinese nationals had applied for citizenship — and would in the future become “DAP voters”.
NRD said a portion of a statement by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, made on January 9 during a press conference, had been manipulated to misrepresent what he had actually said.
It said the 54,000 applications Saifuddin Nasution had mentioned referred to the total number of applications received between 2017 and 2022, and included submissions from diverse backgrounds and countries of origin, and not only China.
NRD also revealed that only 45 individuals from China were awarded Malaysian citizenship between 2019 and July 31, 2023.
