KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 — Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad has mocked Umno for coming to DAP’s defence, amid renewed attacks on the latter’s party constitution.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s Youth wing chief also accused Umno of being hypocritical since it used to oppose DAP, unlike the latter which he said has never made a U-turn on its principles.
“What is funny is that those leaders that sought to defend DAP by saying the party has changed and the Malays should accept them are some of the earliest who fought against the ‘Malaysian Malaysia’ ideology.
“Thank you DAP for not being hypocritical, unlike several Umno leaders. Never once has the party backed down from its principle and ideological struggles,” Wan Ahmad Fayhsal wrote on Facebook yesterday.
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal also claimed that DAP has long paved its way in order to court support Malay votes.
“The core and foundation of DAP’s struggle has never changed, instead it was the political approach that changed.
“Look what is currently taking place now. All Malay parties are at their weakest in the ‘Malaysia Madani’ government. Only DAP endures and has gotten stronger,” he claimed, referring the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration.
This comes as Johor Umno Leader Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said DAP must also do its part to help the national unity government gain the support of Malay voters by “dropping the agenda of secular state and the slogan of Malaysian Malaysia from its party constitution”.
Despite Nur Jazlan’s claim, Clause II in DAP’s party constitution only describes the Federal Constitution as a secular document and a “secular framework as the supreme law of the land”.
Another article under the clause promoting national integration also called for the party to “infuse a national spirit and unity amongst all races to forge a common identity of a united Malaysian Malaysia”.
Yesterday, Zahid said the suggestion for DAP to amend its constitution was not his party’s position and was Nur Jazlan’s personal one.
Last month, Zahid also reiterated to Umno’s supporters that DAP has given its commitment that the party will always respect the religion of Islam as enshrined in the Constitution.
