KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — DAP will appoint a member from Barisan Nasional (BN) to be included in the Penang state exco, party secretary-general Anthony Loke announced today.
Loke said following the party’s had central executive committee (CEC) meeting they unanimously decided to appoint a BN member and the list of candidates will be sent to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in due time.
“Chow as the chief minister as well as all members of the CEC will send a list of names to the chief ministers and menteris besar of the states we won following the conclusion of the state elections on Saturday.
“We also agreed that in Penang we put forth the suggestion to the CM to appoint an exco from BN since it won two seats in Penang. The BN representative will have to be a representative from Penang,” Loke said during a press conference at DAP headquarters today.
“We will continue to fight for the unity government and this move will show our unity and ability to work together for the people,” he said.
Loke also expressed his gratitude towards the DAP and the volunteers who helped the party during campaigning for the state elections. He said Chow will continue to helm Penang state after his swearing-in yesterday.
Apart from Loke, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, Gobind Singh Deo, Teo Nie Ching, Kelvin Yii, Steven Sim Choo Keong, Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar, RSN Rayer and others were also in attendance.
Overall, the Opposition coalition won 146 out 245 seats in the state elections while also winning the most significant share of votes — 3.38 million or 49.3 per cent — cast last Saturday.
A total 70.1 per cent or 6.86 million eligible voters in the six states cast their ballots in Saturday’s poll.
