KLANG, Aug 13 — Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has said the unity coalition with Barisan Nasional (BN) has achieved what it set out to do this state election by obtaining the people’s mandate to form the new state government for the next five years.

Speaking at a press conference, Amirudin said the ‘unity team’ formed just three months ago has proven its worth by successfully overcoming the ‘green wave’ that has been set in motion since February 2020.

“We are prepared to form the Selangor unity government. The state election result will be presented to His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Selangor.

“The Selangor Unity Team is prepared to implement all the plans and policies proposed before.

“This victory is the people’s victory, who have chosen unity for the sake of stability and prosperity,” he said at the Wyndham Acmar hotel here.

The “green wave” is named after the colour associated with PN component party PAS and was coined after GE15 results that saw the Islamist party and its partner Bersatu sweep not just the east coast states of Kelantan and Terengganu, but also Kedah and Perlis on the north-west coast as well as making inroads into other states in the peninsula.

On Perikatan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali’s return to the political scene as an elected representative in Hulu Kelang, Amirudin said the former’s victory of 1,617 majority was not ‘significant’.

On that, Amirudin attributed the Hulu Kelang seat loss to discouraging overall voter turnout and candidate influence.

“I do not think it is significant for a chairman (under PN) who promised to form the new state government since clearly it is the unity coalition of PH-BN that will be forming the state government,” he said.

Separately, Selangor BN deputy chairman Datuk Johan Abdul Aziz said what is most important is that the unity coalition will form the next state government, while Selangor DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo said DAP’s best showing this election (winning all 15 seats it contested) was a team effort from all participating parties under the unity coalition.
