KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has not received any official complaint from a Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) leader, who claimed to have filed one after raising questions about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s rented house in Kajang, Selangor, a news portal reported today.
Free Malaysia Today reported MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki as denying the commission has received any report as alleged by Bersatu information committee member Badrul Hisham Shaharin, who is better known as Chegubard, or any other party member.
Badrul Hisham previously sought to cast doubt over Anwar’s decision to rent a house in Kajang allegedly owned by a Chinese “towkay” instead of the official prime minister’s residence in Seri Perdana, Putrajaya.
On July 11, Badrul Hisham posted a statement on Facebook claiming to have presented proof to the MACC regarding Anwar’s properties, the PM’s current personal residence and the vehicles that the latter was said to have used.
The news portal also quoted an unnamed MACC source denying any formal report lodged over Anwar’s properties.
According to the source, Badrul Hisham only voiced an intention to submit a memorandum concerning his allegations during a press conference outside the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya last Tuesday.
“He refused to enter MACC’s headquarters and just said he would submit the information (backing his allegations) via post.
“Until now, MACC has yet to receive any official complaint or memorandum from him,” the source was quoted as saying.
Badrul Hisham, who was once a PKR member, claimed last week that Anwar’s rented Kajang house is owned by a business tycoon and questioned if there are any agreements to rent or buy the place.
The Bersatu member also mentioned two alleged luxury cars that he said Anwar was using but were allegedly not part of the latter’s declared assets.
He claimed that a car of the Jaguar brand was under the name of a company where Anwar is the founder and adviser, and that the other car is a BMW and registered under a Selangor businessman’s name.
Anwar’s lawyer Datuk Sankara Nair has since refuted the allegations, saying Anwar had signed a 10-year lease agreement in 2020 on the house he currently lives in, and that this evidence can be obtained by doing a search with the Land Office.
Sankara said Anwar is currently renting his current house in Kajang, Selangor for 10 years while the luxury cars he had borrowed have since been returned to their owners.
A police report has since been lodged by Anwar’s political secretary Ahmad Farhan Fauzi against Badrul, Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan and blogger Raggie Jessy Rithaudeen, seeking a criminal defamation investigation into their allegations.
