KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — Caretaker Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has today questioned the sincerity of Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor’s apology to Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Describing the caretaker Kedah menteri besar’s apology as “odd”, Amirudin pointed out that Sanusi may have apologised but he did not actually admit to wrongfully insulting the Selangor Ruler.

“In the end, he did ask for forgiveness even though he did not admit doing any wrong. That is what’s odd. Let the police investigate.

“When he is chastised, he said that there was no wrongdoing. After that he apologised and so on,” he was quoted saying by Malaysian Gazette.

Amirudin added that the incident should serve as a reminder for politicians to be careful when making speeches because there can be consequences.

In a Facebook post this morning, Sanusi said he had sent a letter to the Selangor Palace to apologise for remarks he allegedly made against the monarchy.

The politician from Islamist party PAS claimed that his remark was taken out of context by his political rivals.

Amirudin said that he has not received any communication from the Palace regarding this issue, and was not aware of the Sultan’s or the Palace’s feelings and opinions on the matter.

“I cannot speak for the palace officials. They have their own Royal Council members who were appointed by the Sultan himself so maybe they will have a meeting, I am unsure.

“This issue involves some constitutional laws and is being investigated, so I will leave it up to the police,” he said.

In a recent programme in Selangor, Sanusi was alleged to have criticised the Sultan of Selangor and disputed his prerogative in appointing Amirudin as the state’s menteri besar.

Sanusi’s apology only came after Selangor Council of the Royal Court member Datuk Emran Abdul Kadir demanded Sanusi to issue a public apology and lodged a police report against the PAS leader.
