PETALING JAYA, June 28 — Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman said his party will meet with Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) to discuss possible cooperation in the six state elections due in weeks.
However, he said efforts in this direction were still in the preliminary stage.
“We have been speaking to them even before elections, there are a lot more commonalities than differences, especially issues that are of common interest.
“So, where we can collaborate, we should collaborate,” he said at a news conference here today.
On a separate matter, Syed Saddiq also urged all candidates contesting in the state polls to declare their assets in keeping with election promises.
“In 2018, asset declaration was made mandatory but after five years of the federal government's administration, we still haven't heard any feedback regarding the asset declaration system although it has been promised.
“When we talk about politics, check balance is very important and we cannot support a system that causes centralisation of power because it will eventually dampen the people's institutions from the perspective of check balance,” he said.
Syed Saddiq said asset declarations would demonstrate good governance and discourage corruption, and urged all parties contesting in the state elections to adopt it as a requirement for all government leaders.
Earlier this week, Syed Saddiq announced that his party would independently contest in the elections for Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, and Terengganu.
Muda applied to join the PH coalition before last year’s general election but has yet to be accepted as a formal member.
PH secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said in March that he had been “too busy” to evaluate Muda’s application letter.
