PUTRAJAYA, June 23 — The conditions for the Net Energy Metering (NEM) and Self-Consumption for Solar Photovoltaic Installation (SelCo) programmes have been loosened to encourage the use of photovoltaic (PV) solar systems, Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC) Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said today.

In a press conference this evening, he said that one of the conditions that had been relaxed was the increase in the capacity limit for each home to apply for NEM Rakyat.

“The capacity limit for permitted PV solar systems under the NEM NOVA and Selco programmes has been increased from 75 per cent to 85 per cent,” he said.

He added that the SelCo programme is also now open to high-voltage (HV) applicants and participants.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will also announce several improvements to encourage the installation of PV solar systems, he said.

“The implementation of this new decision under the NEM and SelCo programmes will be enforced starting from July 15, 2023 based on guidelines that the Energy Commission has updated,” he said.

He said that the NRECC ministry is committed to the shift towards sustainable energy while considering energy security.

“The ministry encourages the practice of energy efficiency and the shift towards renewable energy by providing the installation of PV solar systems to users as an option to control their electricity bills,” he said.

In March, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng applauded the Sarawak government’s proposal for compulsory solar panels to be fitted in houses for new residential areas, calling for the federal government to come up with similar policies in light of the climate crisis.

He added that the cost of installing solar panels has decreased significantly in recent years, making it a more affordable and practical solution for new homeowners.
