MIRI, June 20 — The police have made their biggest drug haul in Sarawak so far this year with the seizure of 768.5kg of various types of drugs worth an estimated RM47.2 million.
The drugs were seized from five locations here on June 18 in raids conducted by the Bukit Aman and Sarawak Narcotics Crimes Investigation Departments (NCID).
Bukit Aman NCID director Datuk Seri Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said that the raiding team also arrested three local men aged between 28 and 37 who are suspected to be involved in drug trafficking.
“On June 18, between 1.30am and 4pm, we raided an entertainment outlet, three premises believed to be used for the storage of the drugs and an open area within the city,” he told a press conference at the Miri police headquarters today.
He disclosed that the drugs seized were 686.7kg of ketamine, 81.8kg of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and 1.15g of Erimin 5 pills, adding that the drugs can cater to 2,561,740 addicts.
The police also seized a car worth RM80,000, cash amounting to RM2,800 and jewellery worth RM1,957.
“This brings the total seizure to RM47,292,389,” Mohd Kamarudin said.
He said the drugs were brought in from Brazil and Taiwan by a syndicate using courier services and stored in residential premises.
“These drugs will then be distributed for local market,” he added.
He revealed that this syndicate has been active since February this year.
On the three suspects arrested, he said they had all tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
“Two of the suspects also have previous record for drug- and criminal-related offences,” he added.
The three suspects have been remanded for seven days from June 19 to facilitate police investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The section carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and at least 15 strokes of the cane if convicted.
Mohd Kamarudin also said during the raid on the entertainment outlet, 57 out 117 individuals who were checked, had tested positive for drugs.
The 57 people are being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same act for drug abuse, he added.
Among those present at the press conference were Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, Sarawak NCID chief ACP Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah and Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu. — Borneo Post
