KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 — Former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng has been given a deferment to begin his 10-year prison term in the US, Bloomberg reported today.
The Malaysian who was found guilty of abetment in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) global embezzlement was supposed to enter US prison on May 4, but will now only be imprisoned from August 7, the newswire reported.
According to Bloomberg, Ng’s request to delay his sentencing was granted by US district judge Margo Brodie yesterday, without explanation.
Ng filed the deferment request last Friday through his lawyer Marc Agnifilo in a bid to spend more time with his family who had travelled from Malaysia to New York, especially his daughter who will be turning 11 in June.
He was reported telling the US federal court on March 9 that he had not seen his daughter for over four years since his arrest in 2018.
Ng was extradited from Malaysia to the US to face trial in New York in early 2019 and is expected to faces charges related to 1MDB at home once he’s released from the US prison.
Ng was convicted last month of helping his former Goldman Sachs boss Tim Leissner embezzle and launder billions in US dollars to bribe government officials for business.
Leissner was never charged.
