KOTA KINABALU, April 27 — Tourism is high on the list of development opportunities between Singapore and Sabah, said state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew after a meeting with the High Commissioner of Singapore to Malaysia, His Excellency (HE) Vanu Gopala Menon.

She said that among the topics discussed were ideas on building bilateral cooperation, as well as the Sabah Tourism and Trade Office (STTO) in Singapore, which is in the midst of being set up.

“STTO is a positive development and will definitely open up economic opportunities for Sabah and Singapore for mutual benefit,” said Liew who had also wanted to find out more about Singapore’s regulations governing Airbnb operators during the meeting.

The two met here yesterday after Menon arrived for a five-day working visit which includes an overnight Mount Kinabalu climb.

Menon had said that he wanted to talk to Liew about possible collaborations and strengthening the cooperation between Singapore and Sabah following the resumption of travel and tourism.

“I had a very good meeting with Liew. We discussed ways in which we can promote cooperation between Singapore and Sabah in tourism. I think there are plenty of things we can do together.

“I hope STTO will be able to encourage more Singaporeans to visit Sabah and to enhance trade in Sabah. This (STTO) is a relationship that has long-term potential, and we should work on it and make it a success,” he said.

Singapore was among the first countries to resume direct flights to Sabah last year after most Covid lockdown restrictions were lifted.
