KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 — Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said a detailed guideline for Airbnb short-term rentals in Malaysia was being developed and will be revealed soon.

The move was in response to the budget hotel industry's calls for the government to regulate the platform for private home owners to rent out their property for short-term stays.

“We need about one or two months to establish more detailed and specific guidelines,” he told reporters at his ministry’s breaking-of-fast event.

Tiong said the guideline would also include safety measures for campsite operators.

In February, Malaysia Budget and Business Hotel Association president Sri Ganesh Michiel had asked the government to regulate Airbnb in Malaysia to ensure an even playing field.

Yesterday, Ganesh urged the government to resolve problems affecting the industry before asking more hoteliers to support the Rahmah initiative to offer products and services to consumers at discounted prices.
