JOHOR BARU, April 3 — A foreign worker from Myanmar was killed, while another was seriously injured, after they were allegedly involved in a suspected gang fight with their fellow countrymen at a rented shophouse in Taman Desa Cemerlang, Ulu Tiram here yesterday.

Seri Alam police chief Superintendent Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said police officers were immediately despatched to the location after being alerted to the incident at 11.14pm.

He said they found the two victims in a room of the shophouse, and that investigators later recovered several bloodstained items of clothing and alcohol bottles at the crime scene.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident involved an argument among several drunk foreign workers that ended in a fight.

“The fight saw a 32-year-old die of a stab wound to the chest, while his 51-year-old friend sustained serious injuries to his right arm.

“The body of the deceased has been sent to Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI) for an autopsy, while the injured man is receiving treatment at the same hospital,” said Mohd Sohaimi in a statement today.

It is understood that both victims and suspects are from Myanmar and employed as construction workers.

Acting on information, Mohd Sohaimi said a team from the state police contingent’s serious crimes division and the Seri Alam district police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) managed to arrest seven foreign workers on suspicion of their involvement in the incident.

He said the suspects, consisting of six men and a woman, were aged between 22 and 51.

“The suspects have been remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) for four days starting today.

“The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder,” he said, adding that police managed to solve the case within 24 hours.

Mohd Sohaimi said police are also looking for another male suspect, a 41-year-old Myanmar national by the name of Myint Hlaing.
