JOHOR BARU, March 23 — The Johor police are on a hunt for a group of 20 secret society members after they allegedly caused a ruckus at a funeral ceremony in a mortuary here yesterday.

Johor police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said that a day before the incident the victim, who was also a notorious criminal, was brutally killed by his assailants using firearms.

“Last Monday, a Chinese man in his 30s was reported to have been killed at Melodies Garden here. The victim was shot several times and an investigation is underway to find out the motive for the murder.

“The next day, during the victim's funeral, the police were informed that a group of 20 men had come and created a ruckus at the deceased's last rites,” he told reporters at the Johor police contingent headquarters here.

Kamarul Zaman was commenting on the slaying of an alleged gang leader who was executed gangland-style in front of a convenience store at about 1am in Melodies Garden here last Monday.

Checks revealed that the alleged gang leader was known to be violent and had a notorious reputation.

He was shot several times to his head and body during the fateful incident that was believed to have been sparked by a rival gang.

The state’s top cop explained that the police are also investigating claims that the victim was also involved in a brutal murder case at a petrol station in Taman Pelangi here about six years ago.
