KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 — Perikatan Nasional candidates will contest using the PAS symbol for the state elections in Kelantan and Terengganu due this year, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said today.
The coalition’s supreme council also decided in a meeting yesterday that its candidates will use the PN logo in the remaining state elections of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, and Penang, he added.
“The supreme council also directs the election machinery in these six states to make ready and be at the highest level of preparations,” the PN secretary-general said in a statement.
The coalition had employed a similar strategy of using the PAS logo in areas with large Malay majorities during the 15th general election to great effect, nearly allowing chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to return as the prime minister once more.
Using the PAS logo in GE15 allowed the PN coalition to dominate in Kelantan and Terengganu, winning all 22 federal seats in the two states and 73 in total across the country.
Today, Hamzah said the PN supreme council also decided on Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor as its election director for the six state polls.
The six states must hold their elections this year as they did not dissolve their assemblies when Parliament was disbanded last year for the general election.
