MACHANG, March 19 — One hundred and sixteen (161) recipients of People’s Housing Programme (PPR) houses in Machang and Batang Merbau received offer letters and house keys from the Local Government Development Ministry today.
Minister Nga Kor Ming said the initiative was the government’s effort to help residents, especially the lower-income (B40) group to own a house.
“The Machang PPR Project involves 418 housing units, with a total value of RM75 million, while Batang Merbau PPR involves 150 units with a value of RM22.1 million.
“This 700-square-foot home has three bedrooms, a living room and kitchen, and a utility room that is considered on par with other affordable housing,” he told reporters after handing over the PPR Machang and Batang Merbau offer letters and keys for the rent-to-own housing scheme (RTO) today.
Nga further said that the PPR projects are also equipped with persons with disabilities (PWD) units, surau, community hall, convenience store, restaurants and kindergarten.
“The rental rate is at RM225 with an additional RM140 for maintenance. The total payment for a month is RM365.
“Rental payments of RM225 per month for a maximum period of 20 years paid by each PPR house teant would only amount to RM54,000 compared to the cost of building the house which is estimated at RM147,000 to RM179,000 per unit,” he said.
He said people should consider themselves lucky because the government has given nearly 65 per cent subsidy for a comfortable, safe and habitable house. — Bernama
