JOHOR BARU, March 6 — Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong today urged his party members in the state to assist flood victims after Johor was hit by the worst flood ever since 2006.

He said in light of the situation immediate cleaning work should be carried out after the flood recedes.

“With that, volunteers are urgently needed,” he said in a Twitter post announcing the Johor DAP Flood Disaster Management Committee today.

Liew announced Johor DAP secretary and Stulang assemblyman Andrew Chen Kah Eng as the Johor DAP Flood Disaster Management Committee chairman.

“Chen will be assisted by Labis MP Pang Hok Liong, who is appointed as his deputy.

“All Johor DAP representatives are also appointed as members of this committee,” he said.

Liew’s announcement came after Johor was the worst out of three states to be hit by floods since last week. The other states are Pahang and Melaka.

This morning, Johor recorded an increase in the number of flood victims at 49,410.

Yesterday, Liew highlighted that the flood victims are in dire need of mattresses and blankets as he noticed elderly people and children forced to sleep on canteen benches and the floor during his visit to a flood evacuation centre in Chaah.

The Deputy Trade and Industry Minister also pointed out that dry food like biscuits and canned food are needed.

Liew, who is also the Iskandar Puteri MP, said volunteers are urgently needed in such a disaster.

“There are three phases to return to normalcy. First is rescue and relief. Second is cleaning up and the third is rehabilitating and rebuilding,” he said.

Those who are interested to be volunteers can contact any DAP Johor representative or Ho Bao Kheong at 019-755 3073.
