KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 — Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said today that he aims to reach a decision about 10,000 citizenship applications by the end of his first year as home minister.
To date, he has resolved 4,294 cases since taking on the portfolio in December, he said during his winding-up speech to Parliament this evening.
“For the information of the members of this House, I have set my key performance indicator (KPI) at a minimum of 10,000 citizenship applications for just this year alone,” he said.
So far, nearly 60 per cent of the cases he had reviewed were approved, he added.
Saifuddin Nasution also said that he has set up a special task force for the citizenship issues in Sarawak in conjunction with the state.
The task force will help to complete the documentation needed for a citizenship application, which will then be vetted according to Article 15a of the Federal Constitution, he said.
The 946 cases under this category will hopefully be resolved within the target of six months, he added.
Besides that, he announced that he will be holding a workshop this Friday with various stakeholders, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs), on the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, also known as Sosma.
