KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 — The government wants to expand the “Rahmah” initiative by increasing the number of participants and sponsors, not just for meals but other products as well.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub was speaking at a press conference after launching the Menu Rahmah at Nasi Kandar Stadium Restaurant today.

He said the government will work with banks and other industry players as well to deal with the rising costs of living.

“This shows that KPDN is more confident and more involved so that we can focus on inviting them to help deal with the cost of living.

“If we continue (to engage) with big companies like Petronas and banks, I’m sure they (other companies) will come forward to help,” he added.

Salahuddin added that there is no time limit nor compulsion for any restaurant to implement Menu Rahmah meals as it is just an initiative to help those in need with cheaper meals.

On claims that the Menu Rahmah initiative is just a rehash of the “Menu Bajet” implemented during the Barisan Nasional administration, he said, “I do not deny the efforts that have been made before. Good is still good. I’m just continuing the good work.

“As long as people’s stomachs are full. That is our intention.”

Salahuddin launched the Menu Rahmah initiative on Jan 31, with as many as 15,000 eateries joining the effort to help reduce the cost of living for Malaysians.
