KUCHING, Jan 31 — The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) is encouraging housewives in the country to register as contributors under the Housewives Social Security Scheme (SKSSR) implemented on December 1 last year.

Its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the scheme was beneficial to housewives as a form of protection in the event of an accident or any incident that might affect their ability to run their households.

Citing an example, she said a housewife (Nur Atirah Jafar), who was a contributor to the scheme, was killed in an accident on December 26 last year, and her family was entitled to receive a survivors’ pension.

“Her case was identified by the Social Security Organisation (Socso) after it went viral on social media,” she told reporters after handing over RM2,000 as funeral compensation to Nur Atirah’s family in Kampung Bintawa Hilir, here, today.

“The deceased’s one-year-old child will also receive a monthly pension until the age of 21,” she said.

Based on Socso’s data, more than 40,000 housewives are contributing to SKSSR in Sarawak. — Bernama
