The letter, signed by Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, said that the suspension was in accordance with Clauses 10.6 and 5.9 of the Umno constitution as Hishammuddin had breached Clause 20.9 of the same constitution.
The letter did not specify what incident or action involving Hishammuddin had amounted to the breach in the regulations.
“The suspension will be in force for six years beginning January 27, 2023, or two Umno supreme council terms,” read the letter.
On January 27, Ahmad Maslan announced the suspension and sacking of several Umno leaders.
Other than Hishammuddin, those suspended included the party’s former information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan and former supreme council member Datuk Fathul Bari Mat Jahya
Those sacked included former Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and former Selangor chapter chief Tan Sri Noh Omar.
In his statement announcing the matter, Ahmad Maslan said: “Among their offences were running as an independent candidate, becoming candidates for parties not Barisan Nasional (BN) and being involved in helping rival parties during GE15”.
