KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 — The Umno supreme council decision last night to purge the party of dissenters from within will backfire, its former secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa predicted today.
He was referring to the expulsion and suspension of 44 members, which included former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and former Selangor Umno chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar.
“The ‘cleansing’ they are doing will only produce more dirt because the real source of the dirt is still in the party,” he said in a post-midnight Facebook post shortly after the news broke.
“They are proud to monopolise power in the party, riding on the party name based on a false narrative of their own making even though the party is being destroyed from their own doing.
“They created lies and finally they believe in their own lies. Anyone who tries to speak the truth will be branded a traitor,” he added, without specifying anyone by name.
Annuar, a former Umno veteran, had been sacked last December after being accused of tarnishing the party’s reputation.
He also commiserated with those who have found themselves newly excommunicated from Umno.
“There are many more endeavours in front of us. The important thing is we remain principled, dare to speak the truth, and always fight for what is right (For Islam, Race, and Nation),” he wrote in the same Facebook post.
He said Umno will eventually meet its downfall when the members leave the party en masse.
He said that Malaysians have already given clear signs that they were no longer supportive of Umno but the party’s top leaders have refused to acknowledge them as they are in denial and would blame everyone but themselves.
“So leave Umno to them to turn it into their personal shield and trade it as their private company.
“We continue our fight our way. Insyaallah,” Annuar added.
