KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 — The Umno supreme council will convene tomorrow to discuss meeting and election dates for the party’s divisions and branches to pave the way for internal leadership polls, party secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said today.
He added that selections at the divisional and branch level have to be finalised prior to the Umno election, which must be held before May 19.
“We need to have our party election before May 19 because we made an amendment to our party constitution requiring that it be held six months after the 15th general election (GE15), which was on November 19 last year.
“So tomorrow’s supreme council meeting will decide when the divisions and branches will meet, as well as their respective election dates,” said the Pontian MP during a press conference at Arina Uniti Tower here.
Ahmad Maslan, however, did not reveal any date for the internal party polls.
When pressed by reporters, he denied that the Umno election will take place next month, only reiterating that it will happen before the deadline in May.
On January 19, Umno delegates voted through a motion for the party’s presidency and deputy presidency to go uncontested during the upcoming internal election.
Former Umno Youth chief and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin had alleged that the party manipulated the result by placing “foreign delegates” in the hall during the voting process.
