KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 — In conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced toll exemption for all vehicles on January 20 and 21.
He said that Transport Minister Anthony Loke had brought up the matter after discussions with toll concession companies.
“Good news.... The transport minister has taken the initiative to hold discussions with toll concessionaires, and they have agreed to waive toll charges on the 20th and 21st,” said Anwar during a press conference after today’s Cabinet meeting.
He also said that the toll exemption would cost the government about RM40 million.
Yesterday, Loke said that seven major traffic offences, namely cutting queue, overtaking on double lines, jumping a red light, driving over the speed limit, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seat belt or helmet and driving in the emergency lane will be non-compoundable throughout the Chinese New Year festive season.
Recently, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that around 3.8 million vehicles were expected to use the highways nationwide starting this weekend.
