KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — Umno lawmaker Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today said that he is considering contesting in the upcoming party election.

However, he did not disclose which position but only said that “if the position is allowed to be contested”.

“We have to wait for the meeting... and if the meeting decides that the position will be contested, I myself don’t mind running in the next election,” he told reporters after attending Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s official address during the party’s annual general assembly.

The contest for the position of president and vice president caused controversy when party leaders had different views on whether it should be contested or not.

Yesterday, former Umno youth president Khairy Jamaluddin said he is confident that Zahid is a fighter and is not afraid to face challenges over the party’s presidential position.

Khairy said through his Instagram account that Umno should open up the presidential post to be contested in order to maintain democracy in the Malay political party.
