JOHOR BARU, Jan 12 — Federal police will conduct an investigation into the death of a detainee who was under the custody of the Johor Baru South district police while receiving treatment at Larkin health clinic here yesterday.
Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the deceased was a 47-year-old man who had been under detention at the Johor Baru South district police headquarters in Larkin and was waiting to be charged in court with a drug offence when he complained of being unwell at 6.20am and vomited yesterday.
“The detainee was then taken to the Larkin health clinic to seek treatment at 7.45am. Following that, the attending medical officer later confirmed the detainee’s death at 8.30am.
“For now, the case has been classified under sudden death. Bukit Aman’s integrity and compliance standards department will be investigating the case,” Raub said in a statement last night.
He said an autopsy is scheduled at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (here today.
He said the detainee was a wanted person for a narcotics case under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and had been arrested last Tuesday.
“The detainee, who has 12 previous records related to drug cases, was temporarily detained before he was scheduled to be charged in court today,” he said.
