PETALING JAYA, Jan 7 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) said today it will focus on the upcoming six state elections to defend its governments in Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Penang while attempting to win Kedah.
Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the pact will also try to become strong opposition in Kelantan and Terengganu, as the mandate in the six states expire in less than six months.
"The focus is on defending the three PH states of course.
"We will also have the determination to send a strong opposition voice even if we did not take over Kelantan and Terengganu but [we] have a balanced chance in Kedah,” he told reporters after attending PH presidential council meeting at PKR headquarters here.
Saifuddin also said that the presidential council had instructed the pact's elections committee to be reactivated which will ensure early preparation by the coalition.
He said the coalition has yet to determine further collaboration with other allies such as Barisan Nasional, Malaysia United Democratic Alliance (Muda) or the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) as it wanted the committee to evaluate the matter first.
"It was said in general before but not specifically as we want the election committee to get ready first,” he said.
In the 15th general election last year, PH managed to form a federal government together with former rivals Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to deny Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Both PH and BN however fared badly in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, with PH only winning one seat in Kedah while the latter lost all their federal seats there.
