KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 27 — Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil today said that he takes the issue of Menara Kuala Lumpur’s (Menara KL) management seriously, after it was raised to him on social media and through questions from the media.
In a statement, he said that his ministry will monitor the issue and is prepared to give its full cooperation should the authorities commence investigations.
“I was given a detailed briefing on the concession of Menara KL’s management by the Communications and Digital Ministry on December 14,” he said.
He added that he will be given another briefing on the matter by Telekom Malaysia (TM) on January 3.
“I have been made to understand that the concession of Menara KL’s management is currently in its third interim term until December 31, 2022 by Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB),” he said.
Menara KL’s management will be taken over from TM through its subsidiary MKLSB by Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd (Hydroshoppe) via full shareholding, he noted.
Yesterday, allegations surfaced on social media by Twitter user @FreeMsian that Menara KL's ownership was transferred to an unknown company prior to the recent general elections (GE15).
The user had also alleged that the company was a proxy for a former minister and tagged Fahmi in the thread.
In 2011, The Star reported that MKLSB signed a 10-year concession agreement with the government worth RM50 million.
MKLSB is responsible for the operation, management and maintenance of Menara KL as well as its land, which is made up of five lots of federal land controlled by the Federal Land Commissioner, the report said.
