KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 — The Selangor government is drafting specific guidelines for camping activities, following last Friday’s deadly landslide in Batang Kali, Hulu Selangor.

State Local Government Committee chairman Ng Sze Han said the state government will speed up the census on the activities in question throughout Selangor.

He said the census would also identify suitable camping sites and determine environmentally sensitive areas, or those unsuitable and risky for leisure activities.

“The state government is also seeking feedback from stakeholders on recreational and camping activities such as entrepreneurs, recreational and camping associations and government agencies.

“All these findings will help the state government to draw up guidelines so that camping and recreational activities can be carried out safely and without harm coming to any party,” he said in a statement today.

So far, Ng said 61 camping sites under the administrative area of the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) have been found to be operating illegally and trespassing on government land.

“Only operators who comply with the guidelines will be certified by the Local Authority and Tourism Selangor to carry out the activity,” he added.

It was reported yesterday that the police had called the operator of the Father’s Organic Farm campsite and two of its workers to assist in investigations of the landslide tragedy.

Prior to this, Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming had said that the campsite was operated without a licence from the Hulu Selangor District Council.

The tragedy has claimed the lives of 26 people, while seven more remain missing. They were among the 94 people at the campsite when a landslide occurred at 2.24am last Friday.
