KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 — PAS members can join any non-governmental organisations (NGO) including Muafakat Nasional (MN) which was established by disgruntled former Ketereh Umno chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

Utusan Malaysia reported the vice-president of the Islamist party, Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, saying PAS members can join it as long as MN does not declare itself a political party.

“If you join an NGO there is no problem. What is not allowed in terms of PAS rules is joining other parties because their membership will automatically expire if they do so.

“But if they join an NGO like MN or any association, it's not a problem. So far we see that MN has not had any clashes with PAS,” he said as quoted by Utusan Malaysia in Kota Baru yesterday.

Mohd Amar who is also the deputy mentri besar of Kelantan said so far there has been no orders from party leadership barring members from joining MN.

Annuar had launched MN, which shares the same name as a defunct political alliance between Umno and PAS, after he was snubbed from contesting the 15th general election.

On December 12, Utusan Malaysia reported Annuar claiming MN had received more than 10,000 members within a few hours of its launch.

He later announced several popular members of MN including artists Datuk Jamal Abdillah and Datuk Eizlan Yusof.

Some of those appointed to MN's supreme council included Pahang royal family member Datuk Seri Tengku Idris Sultan Abu Bakar, Tanjong Karang Umno chief Tan Sri Noh Omar, Parti Bangsa Malaysia's Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin and Datuk Seri Edmund Santhara Kumar Ramanaidu, and Professor Datuk Dr Yahya Ibrahim, the former Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin vice-chancellor.

They also include law lecturer Datuk Shamrahayu Abd Aziz, popular preacher Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, Universiti Sains Malaysia's Prof Wan Azman Wan Sulaiman and former minister Datuk Seri Md Redzuan Mat Yusof of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.
