GEORGE TOWN, Dec 16 — Police have arrested 32 men believed to be bookies involved in the 2022 Qatar World Cup football gambling activities in operations carried out around Penang from November 19 to December 15.
Penang Police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said they carried out 19 raids through Ops Soga IX in a bid to crack down on all illegal betting activities during the World Cup campaign.
“We arrested 28 Malaysians and four foreigners, all aged from 20 to 50s, in a series of raids under the operation until yesterday. Ops Soga IX will continue to be carried out until the Qatar World Cup ends.
“Throughout the operation, police seized RM64,873 cash, 26 mobile phones and SIM cards, a laptop, a modem and seven betting slips,” he said in a statement today.
He added that all the suspects have been remanded for further investigations under Section 6(3), Section 6(1) and Section 4 (1)(d) of the Betting Act 1953.
He also called on members of the public to channel information related to gambling activities to the Penang police operations room hotline at 04-2221522 or the nearest police station. — Bernama
